A’páísttotso’p – We Move Around, Changing Camps

January 16, 2017

At Saamis Aboriginal Employment and Training, A’páísttotso’p is a new program that addresses one of the modern faces of this tradition: The challenge that arises when a band member moves from his or her reserve into the city of Lethbridge in pursuit of employment and career development.

A’páísttotso’p – We Move Around, Changing Camps

There’s a long-time Blackfoot custom of traveling throughout the territory, changing camps in order to acquire different resources in their respective seasons. At Saamis Aboriginal Employment and Training, A’páísttotso’p is a new program that addresses one of the modern faces of this tradition: The challenge that arises when a band member moves from his or her reserve into the city of Lethbridge in pursuit of employment and career development.

Too often, those who undertake this transition face unexpected barriers, whether it be through encounters with racism, or a lack of adequate transportation, family problems, or the need to obtain special credentials like industrial safety tickets. A’páísttotso’p aims to reduce such obstacles by bringing together a host of mentors and community organizations to offer Saamis clients eleven weeks of paid training in strategies and skills that can help anyone succeed.

What makes A’páísttotso’p unique as an employment program is it’s strong Blackfoot orientation. Participants will learn from elders, travel to sacred sites, and explore the application of traditional values, concepts, and practices in a modern urban labor environment, while developing or enhancing their employment portfolios.
